Free Bar Replay Tools Compared (2026)

Last updated: June 2026

Most bar replay tools cost money, whether through monthly subscriptions, one-time licenses, or premium tiers that unlock the replay feature. For traders who just want to practice on historical data without a financial commitment, here is what is genuinely free in 2026, and what each option is actually good for.

StrategyTune

StrategyTune is a browser-based replay tool built specifically for manual backtesting. It is free with no account required to start. What sets it apart from the rest of this list:

  • Both bar-by-bar and tick-by-tick. Step through completed candles, or drop to tick detail to see exactly how each one formed.
  • No downloads. Data streams directly from multiple broker sources. Nothing to find, download, or convert.
  • Timeline seeking. Drag the timeline to jump to any point, like scrubbing a video. Jump forward or back to re-examine a setup.
  • Speeds up to 50,000x. Cover months of data in a single session.
  • Built-in trade simulation. Place trades with stop and target during replay and track win rate, P&L, and more.
  • Broad coverage. Forex, indices, commodities, and crypto.

Its main strength is removing setup friction: open the site, pick an instrument, choose a date, and replay. No install, no download, no account.

TradingView

TradingView has the best charting on the web, and its Bar Replay is the most popular way traders first try replay. The catch: replay is restricted on the free plan, it is bar-by-bar only, intraday history is tied to your tier, and there is no built-in trade simulation. Great for charting and higher-timeframe practice; limited as a backtesting engine. See our full breakdown of TradingView Bar Replay.

MetaTrader 4 and 5

MetaTrader is the most widely used forex platform. Both versions have a Strategy Tester with a Visual Mode that replays historical data, but it was built for automated Expert Advisors, not manual replay. For comfortable manual backtesting you usually need a paid plugin (such as Soft4FX), and MT4's bundled data quality is often poor, requiring manual imports of better data. Both are Windows desktop apps.

cTrader Market Replay

cTrader has a solid built-in Market Replay that streams historical tick data with real spreads, and you can place trades through the normal order panel for a realistic feel. The trade-offs: you need a cTrader-supporting broker account, instrument availability depends on that broker, and it is a Windows desktop application.

NinjaTrader Playback

NinjaTrader focuses on futures and its Playback feature replays market data including Level II (order book depth), which most tools do not offer. It is free for simulation use; live trading needs a license. Around 90 days of replay data is available by default. Powerful, but Windows-only with a steeper learning curve.

Which Should You Use?

  • Easiest start, no setup, free: StrategyTune. Open the site and replay, bar or tick, with built-in trade tracking.
  • Best charting (already paying): TradingView, if you do not need tick data or trade simulation.
  • Already on cTrader: cTrader Market Replay is solid for forex.
  • US futures with order flow: NinjaTrader Playback.
  • MetaTrader user: MT5 Visual Mode for basic replay, or switch to a browser tool for tick accuracy without plugins.

For most traders, the best free option is the one with the least friction and the most realistic data. Start with what bar replay is, or learn why tick-by-tick data changes your results.
